The new año

Tonight I'm not very inspirado to write about the new year, pero aún me quedan dos días para clarify las ideas que, lately, hierven en mi cerebro.

Me gustaría recuperarlo.

Comics tell you the truth

Here's a comic about how i've been feeling lately. This is the translation for the English readers:

1)Anxiety
"Sometimes, darkness takes over my soul"

2)
"I feel alone and everything seems pointless"
-Now coming, the next soccer match of the century"

3)
"I realise that very soon a third part of my existence will
have come to an end... and it should have been the best part
of my life, but I feel it was just so so"

4)
"I would like to believe that living is something more than a
slow process of decadence"

5)
"Am I at the terrible point when memories are better than hopes?"

6)
"At this point, I always welcome the conforting thoughts of my friends"
-What you need is a good fuck!
-Yeah, I'm going to jerk off see if anxiety goes away"

Swimming to the surface

I just smoked a piece of joint i had left in my room. This evening, however, I already felt i was going to the surface. It's been four days quite down, depressed. But I'm going up there, I can tell. Going up for good.

Otra vez, de nuevo, me he visto deseando otra vida.
Y vuelvo a estar jodido.

A taste of England

I've been reading -a's writings. I love the way he writes. He has some attempts at email literature which are delicious. Here's one email he wrote in Oxford (and I go to bed, good night you all):

* * *

I love reading English signs, notices, and advertisements. In
Marks&Spenser supermarket, I saw a sign: "A Funny Little Number" on
the package of a fruit that looks a cross between an apple and a pear,
but tastes like neither. At the corner of Cornmarket and Broad
Street, I read a notice: "For your own safely, please wait until the
GREEN MAN shows up."

* * *

Last week I had guests. They refused my apples so I went to the
supermarket to buy some bread. I couldn't decide which one of the
pre-proccessed, pre-packaged, pre-cut loaves I should buy, so I asked
a nearby kind-looking lady, which one is the best-tasting bread.
"Ohhh," she said, quite puzzled, "I really don't know. I don't pay
attention to taste, I just eat it".

* * *

English often name places in quite poetic ways. In Cotswards there
are towns with names like: Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Norton,
Stow-on-the-Wold, The Slaughters, and the ever so honest
Moreton-in-Marsh. But my favorites are actually very close by: a
little street in Oxford called Turn Again Lane, and a lovely nearby
village named Littlemore.

* * *

Balliol College of Oxford University recently held a meeting to
discuss the way housing is allocated to its Fellows. Currently, the
priority is given to older members of the College but Fellows with
children have argued that housing should be granted on the basis of
need. At this point an old don rose up and proclaimed:
"Do we really want to reward people for their lack of self-control?"

-a.
fully in control

Statistics

There are 8 posts about love in this blog, but only 1 post about sex. And that says a lot about the writer.

Back home, cold home

I came back home after a few days at my mom's (I've been having a bad stomach ache, and mom always cooks better soup... then she didn't want me to go:)
Of course, it's cold again, and of course, again I lost time wandering around the net. I discovered this technorati thing, a blog searcher. I searched for myself and was only able to find my father: Oedipus fate I have.
Anyway, somehow I ended up writing this post about frio (cold) that I wrote more than a year ago. A year ago, I was also really cold.

Hips

It's strange to say bye to the person you love the most, to say bye for 3, 4 or maybe even 6 months. How do you do it? When should you give the last hug, the last kiss?
You're in the airport, she carries a bag and has the hands on your hips. That feeling, that old feeling again: her hands, still on my hips, I can still feel the warmth.
We've said bye from so many different airports: Madrid, London, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Paris, Barcelona: everywhere, your hands remain on my hips for several hours, when I will go to bed they will still be there. How do I go to bed? How? When I can still smell you in the sheets...
I was afraid that our goodbyes where becoming just another routine. I was afraid I was getting used to them. I was afraid I could say bye and don't feel a river of sadness crawling up my throat. But it's not the case: I am just like I was the first goodbye, in Paris, when I could not walk the streets no more, when I was crying everywhere I looked.
Today, I planned for the hours after the goodbye. I will be meeting George in half and hour, and we will talk. I will tell him that I want to live with you, no matter how scared I am every time I think of it. I will also meet some friends from primary school, I don't really know what we will talk about, but for sure, seeing other lives unfold will give hope to my own life.
Then, after all the postponings, the time will come to walk upstairs again, and open the door of my empty appartment, and try to sleep. Let's see if I find you online then, Joaquin, and we drink for who knows what.
I am scared of loneliness every time I confirm I am lonely no more, because I have you, and your hands, on my hips.

Aracataca-Macondo

Noodles with sesame

I just had a cup of noodles with sesame for breakfast. A bit of goat cheese, a mandarin and a yogourt. Yes, I'm on holidays. And yes, I'm spending them with my chinese little princess.

Mexican lessons

Lost in translation

Happiness 3.0

The true intelectual is he who embodies the intelect in a life time of unforgettable feelings.

These guys are downloading music in front of the SGAE, a copyrights collector, sort of like the RIAA in the States. In the sign you can read: "We are downloading music here"

It turns out they did that to demostrate that nobody was going to prevent them from doing it, because it's not ilegal according to them. Before the "protest", they called the police and the security of the SGAE to inform them of their, but still, nobody interrupted them.

They downloaded a song by the president of the SGAE: it turns out the guy's a musician.

Funny piece of news you may read (in Spanish) at right here.

Lágrimas negras

Aunque tu
me has dejado en el abandono
aunque ya
se han muerto todas mis ilusiones.

Even though you
have left me abandoned
even now
all my hopes have died.

En vez de despedirme
con Justo encono
en mis sueños te colmo
en mis sueños te colmo
de bendiciones.

Instead of saying bye
with justified rage
in my dreams I cover you
in my dreams I cover you
with blessings.

Sufro la inmensa pena de tu extravio
lloro el dolor profundo
de tu partida
y lloro sin que sepas
que el llanto mio
tiene lagrimas negras
tiene lagrimas negras
como mi vida.

I suffer the greatest grief for you
I cry the deep pain
of your departure
and I cry and you don't realise
that my tears are black tears
that my tears are tears
black like my life.

Tu me quieres dejar
yo no puedo vivir
contigo me voy mi negra
aunque me cueste el morir

You want to leave me
I can't live
with you I go my black
even if it costs my death.

Tu me quieres dejar
yo no quiero sufrir
contigo me voy mi santa
aunque me cueste el morir.

You want to leave me
I can't live
with you I go my bless
even if it costs my death.

Free and fast translation :) from the song Lágrimas Negras (black tears) by Miguel Matamoros (Michael Muslimkiller would be the translation of the name, I guess not quite correct from a contextual point of view)

comments are back

or so it seems, does it?

Books, markets and googles

I woke up early, went straight downstairs
to have a sunday coffee and a croissant,
with Alex and Valeria and a little bit of sun.

Then around the second hand book market I walked. I usually go there around 2pm, but today, 11am, it was a complete different story: many more interesting books, since less people has come.

Anyway, for those of you without a book market nearby, here's the link to a sort of digital book market. You can browse, you can scan, maybe even you can flirt:

Broken Flowers

Nice movie Jarmusch made here. Nothing exceptional, but sweet. One of those movies, kind of road movies, kind of independent, sort of romantic in a way, sort of comedy, cool, well done, with powerful characters. Buffalo 66 comes to my mind, as does Ghost World, Sideways, and probably a bunch more

(it would be nice seeing Woody Allen on a road movie, by the way)

Broken Flowers takes advantage of the Bill Murray effect, topped with something of Jack Nicholson. This guy got his second spring after Sofia C's Lost in Translation. He's quite an actor, maybe too conscious of his role here in Broken Flowers, but still, interesting character. Sort of reminded me of the CIO in my company.

As movies pass by, I'm more and more convinced that making a movie like Broken Flowers is just too difficult, too painful. I mean it must be really something to shoot Sharon Stone the way Jarmusch does, so perfectly cool, but still, such a pain.

I wonder when exactly in the process of shooting the movie the director is actually able to reflect alone on it, to make it in silence, just him and the story. Woody once said it's when he writes and when he edits that the gets the most pleasure out of it. I can tell, cause I mean, it must be such a pain to actually shoot, with all those camera men, light men, sound men, assistants, photographers, make ups, producers, etc etc etc bitching around you and your story.

Or maybe not, who knows. Anyway, time to smoke and sleep. Hard work days are coming to an end for me. I am looking forward to it. Let's see. Cinema, just so great to sit there in front of the big screen.

The queen to be

Ever since I moved to this flat without TV, I decided to disconnect myself from the "news"... every once in a while, I read the online newspapers, and in the morning I get a free newspaper in the metro, but all very superficial, no deep reading.

Today it's a holiday, it's 12 in the morning, and I read a little bit before I have lunch. The prince and the princess of Spain had a female-baby a day ago, the one that was supposed to be "queen" after them. But... you know, it should be masculin: Spanish law prevents women from having the right to be queens by blood.

So now, you know, it turns out all the political forces in Spain have agreed to change the constitution so that a woman can be queen by blood rights, and all the newspapers (conservative or liberal) are filled with sentences like "All the parties aprove of the changes to allow Leonor to be the queen" (El Pais, the most leftist), "It was time women could rule" (El Pais), "Another step against discrimination" (El Pais), etc. etc.

A few things are striking:

1) some days ago, the same political forces were saying that a reform approved by 90% of the catalan pairlament (among other things, the reform claims the right to admit that Catalunya be called a "nation" and manage its own taxes, sort of like a federal relationship like in the US) is absolutely inconstitutional, and because it threatens the integrity of the constitution, it threatens the unity and the future of Spain, and some politicians even compared catalans to the nazis because they want to have Spanish race dissappear.

2) equality, it seems, means that a woman can rule by blood rights over 45 million of people

3) discrimination, it seems, means that a woman who will never have to move her ass to get food on her table will not be discriminated against his brother when it comes to rule over 45 million people by blood rights

But again, politics are but a reflection of society. We have the politicians we deserve. I just thought that, maybe, the leftist El Pais would have some ironical remarks on the matter... But no, being leftist nowadays means to change the appearance of things, but never, never dare to change the thing itself (or even talk about the posibility of). Being leftist and modern is changing the constitution so women can rule by blood rights. Oh, I live in such a progressive country.

Singin in the rain

Dedicated to the angry lovers

I'm listening to this really gay version of singin in the rain by Jamie Cullum. Una pendejada para pendejos, joaquin. I have some very old hash by my side. I change to Frank Sinatra's rain: the bastard, how can he speak such a good english, so cristal clear. Now it's Gene Kelly. Fuck. Happiness is this song.

You shouldn't hurt each other this way, you two. It's just not fair to the mornings that covered your naked bodies. It's always good to hate that somebody you once loved, when you ain't brave enough to hate yourself.

Deciding on who to love or who to hate won't make your life any better. After a false relief, you'll feel as empty as before. Speak frankly, speak clear. Admit it felt good when you made love. Admit there's nothing behind the mask you put on so carefully everyday. Admit your lives are boring, empty. Learn how to appreciate your insignificance.

Sore throat

I have a BIG sore-throat. It's a pain in the ass. The only think I can think of is this sore-throat. Man, a really bad post after such a long time without posting.

Christmas letter (from Pere)

I was reading joaquin's blog, a post where he mentions his christmas, perfectly gray winter at Ihouse. And I suddenly thought of an email letter I wrote to the Ihouse people from Spain, where I was having my christmas holidays, back home after 4 months at Ihouse, Berkeley, California. Here's the letter:

" Dear friends,

Still haunted by the Ihouse Christmas lyrism of Alyosha the plant-keeper, I
write you from the haunted bed of this haunted, my father´s house. The snow
covers the roof and whitens the fields that surround home... through the
window I can see, every morning, a line of icicles hanging from the
neighbours roof. Everything very Christmas-like, but believe me, the warm
sun is better: home, Spanish home, is not the same with white
all over. Anyway, it´s 1am, I don´t want to sleep and I´m writing in bed,
with an old bic pen and a few sheets: I´m against technology
these cold days, although you´re reading this in the screen of an impersonal
personal computer(even if it answers to the name of La Maga.)
A second feeling: I´m sort of tired, and don´t know exactly why. Must be
I´m getting (c)old, old because every year new memories fill my brain like
the red wine in a cup waiting to be drunk or rotten - and I had some (too
much according to my grandma) fine, Spanish wine these days. However, I am
enjoying my tiredness: I´ve come to the conclusion that a man needs nothing
more than a bit of tiredness to enjoy in the company of those he loves to be
the happiest thing on earth (things, like the lamp that lights my dear,
little, warm room now can also be happy.)
I came back home almost a couple of weeks ago (yes, Bernardo, it was also
difficult for me to fall asleep the first days, alone in a big, strange and
empty bed) and the third day I couldn´t help phoning my first-ex-love and
meeting her in a charming, expensive, couple-making restaurant. We ate
excellent foie de canard and I knew that she had just moved to
a brand new, modernist (that was the adjective she used)appartment with her
brand new boyfriend: good for her, and may she bring happy, brand new kids
to the world! We shared the bill, which is a beautiful way to stop sharing
anything else.
My sister is also happy (I´m afraid I´m abusing of this adjective -blame
Christmas spirit and my poor education) learning more and more in a new
jesuist high school. She plays her firsts sonatas on the piano, and sticks
to me the rest of the time... must be that she feels I am the only one who
can understand her (when you´re twelve, you want to
understand) of all the old-fashioned faces of my family. I
can´t hardly see a black hair in my father´s head, and his wife... well, let
me say they are (again!) happy too, because they are now sure (at last)
that they´ll have each other for the rest of their lives, and that´s the
best beggining for a still better ending.
Well, I´m afraid this letter (this is NOT an email) is getting longer than
Alyosha´s report, and anyway I guess it fulfilled its aim: after some
writing, I feel I will be able to sleep. The future is now new year´s eve,
when Barcelona becomes the wildest (and sweetest, like Cartman would say)
scenery to welcome a new year. I will keep a memory (a stardust memory, to
remember Woody Allen) for each of you in the
traditional chin-chin& with champagne at 12:01am, 2002,...
although I can´t predict what night will bring afterwards. I look forward to
seeing you all soon.

Your (virtual) friend, enemy, mom, fruit,... sends you a (virtual) hug,
kiss, hello, hands shaking,...

Pere

P.S. Merry Christmas from Stephen. I met him the other day (he was
completely high, as usual) and told me he might not come back for the Spring
semester. We´ll miss him! (??)"

Oh fuck, do I miss those days! The days when I would be innocent enough to lie, and still, enjoy. Those days were a feeling, a feeling you didn't need to analize or understand. Those days were a feeling, and a feeling is all I got now.

By the way, I love yahoo. Don't ever say google is king anymore.

la la la

I had the strangest day, but somehow I didn't really enjoy. Too many people it's too superficial. Besides, I'm not really into meeting new people lately: rather, I want time to be alone and just think of myself. Like now, finally, at 4:13am, having eaten a marijuana cookie that's not doing anything on me.

I had the longest chat with joaquin yesterday, over messenger, with font 16 so I could read what we wrote while sitting comfortably on landiman's wonderful little armchair, my legs relaxed on the table. It was almost until 7am, but what do you care, right? I do, that's why I write: so I'll remember later on: months later, I'll read that and will look for the saved chat, and read it over.

Actually, maybe that's what i'll do now. To end this strange day that, finally, was able to give me some peace. For that, and for Luca's imagination, it was worth it.

Danielle

Y encontrarla, a veces.

And I remember Alyosha

Alyosha... do you remember the postcard you gave me? There's a man sitting on a chair on top of a roof in a house in the middle of the night and the city. Well, when I first looked out the balcony of my room in my new rented old appartment, I thought of that postcard. As you can see from the previous picture, it sort of looks alike.
You gave me the postcard inside the book "Invisible cities", by Calvino... how much happiness I have had reading that book... here's what you wrote on the postcard, one of the most beautiful texts that have been written for me... mmm, maybe I will transcript it another day :)

Life in the city

People talking, laughing, shouting outside. I look out of the balcony: there's a square of buildings looking inside, and I look outside and see all the balconies, some of them lighted in a mellow yellow: there is life outside, there is life at 23:44 in a random block in Barcelona.

A man looks out the balcony, then retires slowly back to his computer, and continues preparing the class he has to teach next wednesday. It's saturday night, but the man is smiling inside.

Four pictures

Four pictures I've taken recently.

There's landiman's face...

There's a dutch, philips light bulb, the same one that lights landiman's face...

There's my grandma looking outside, facing the light outside that seems to call her...

And, finally, there's two beautiful women but just one kiss...

Korina y Landiman

One more

Or one last. One last thought: I want it so much to make love right now.

Not in the mood at all

I'm not in the mood at all, I just don't want to go to work tomorrow. Fuck, and I stay up late cause I know that when I get into bed, I'll be, in a way, already in tomorrow, already on the way to the office. Because my way to the office begins when I get in bed: if I don't have to work the following morning, oh man, I go to bed in a very different way.

For the last three days I've slept like a pig. I suppose this explains why I'm so not in the mood at all to go to work tomorrow. To morrow, whatever morrow means.

(for those of you readers of only the english chronicles: the previous two posts, in Spanish, have been way more philosophical than this one... though this one is quite philosophical as well, if you think about it)

Y no estamos acostumbrados a mezclar realidades diferentes.

My room

I finished decorating my brand new (though quite old) room. I'm happy, as simple and childish as it sounds. In fact, this week I'm feeling strangely happy and high, and I can't really find a reason: I'm getting few sleep, I'm arranging lots of things, ironing my shirts and cooking to the highest standards.
But I feel so well: I wake up in the morning and greet the daylight with a smile. And I go to work and get a sandwich and a coffee with milk, and I don't seem to need anything else to get on working and kidding with my colleagues.
Maybe the secret is that Marylin Monroe awaits, always there, when I enter my brand new (though quite old) room:

Symmetry

Now that's a difficult word to spell, but it seems it's easy to put into practice by couples. Man... I catched this two couples sleeping on the sand... in quite a similar position. Funny.

New computer

Don't worry, good old laptop (aka g.o.l.) is still there, recovering. But meanwhile I got a secondhand iMac G5. Looks good, feels good. And, most important of all, it works. I'll be, hopefully, posting more now that I have a computer.

Living home

I have an italian neighbour who also happens to be a cook. On friday evening I was reading and somebody knocked on my door. Then I saw him, sitting on the stairs, looking kinda sad.
"Do you happen to have a gas bottle?" he ventured.
"I don't, sorry, we have city gas"
"Well, you know, I was cooking, and suddenly ran out of gas. I have this pots full of almost cooked food. May I use your kitchen?"
"Sure, come on in"
One minute and he appears with a big casserole with plenty of vegetables inside, and on the other hand a pan with fried onion and liver. They are already boiling in my kitchen, I look at him, we talk, he let's me try.
"We're gonna make this together. Come on, help me, try it and tell me whether it's any good"
I try it, it's excellent. He turns off the fire. Mixes the liver and the vegetables together. Says "thanks Pere" and walks away with the casserole and the pan.
I continue reading. Some hours later landiman (my flatmate) comes back. He comes with: (i) an american punky that speaks mexican; (ii) an abc from san francisco, california; and (iii) a swedish male vegan. We prepare and have dinner. The punky keeps on making fun of our Spanish. "You can't scare me with those ridiculous words you use in Spain: "joder, mierda, cabrón"... so ridiculous" And then she goes on to recite a list of scary mexican insults. Or maybe she's the one that's scary. She is, actually.
While we are having dinner somebody knocks on the door. It's my italian neighbour, he comes with a tupper-ware full of vegetables with liver: "You have it". He says hi to the people, he leaves.
I offer the liver, the swedish vegan tells me he's vegan, the punky is sort of vegetarian too, of course the abc from sf, california, is vegetarian too, and landiman, well, he tries some until I tell him it's liver and he decides he does not like it. I eat the fucking liver with vegetables myself. It's excellent.
Anyway, that was friday, and now it's sunday night. I have to work tomorrow. Somebody just knocked on my door. I didn't want to stand up and go see who was knocking, but I finally did. It's him: he's holding landiman's jambe.
"You can have it, landiman's not coming back for some days"
"No, have it back, Pere, if I play it for too long the neighbours are going to protest."
"Landiman's away"
"You can come on in to my home if you feel lonely, Pere"
"It's ok, I have to go to bed, I wake up at 7"
"Work?"
"Yeah"
We understand each other. I close the door. I go back to the computer. I write.

I miss it too

Yes, I also miss blogging, but it's being impossible lately. I'm moving out, haven't figured out how to connect to the net home, plus g.o.l. collapsed before I could sell it. So I still have it, broken. G.o.l. does not want to be sold.
So, anyway, I write briefly from the office, just to recommend you the movie "Darwin's nightmare". You shouldn't miss it.

First and last

First post I write from my rented apartment. Today I brought in the bed (still didn't build it though) and I felt so tired I just decided to stay.
Last, well, it might be the last post I write... with my good old laptop. I didn't want to write about it, because I knew I would feel nostalgic if I did. But I guess g.o.l. deserves it. It's been two years since we met. I was about to leave to London. G.o.l. was such a good company there. It played Friends and Southpark for me on the nights I was feeling tired. It played Bowling for colombine the day I took my last masters' exam. I wrote my dissertation. I started this blog, and for two years I've been writing it almost entirely from this very same keyboard.
But only now, when I am about to sell it, I write about g.o.l. The laptop that never had a name, until it was sold. Maybe I shouldn't sell it: but you know, they pay quite a good money for it, and next year nobody will even want to get it for free. Yes, I am giving g.o.l. the last chance to cost some money. That should make it feel young, one last time.

The day after

I came back from Hong Kong on tuesday, and fell asleep around 2am. At 6am, I woke up, and I saw this:

sunrise at barcelona

And so I decided to keep on looking.

Somehow, I still felt on holidays. Being on holidays means seeing different things, and to me, well, I think it was the first time I looked carefully at a sunrise from my room.

However, the sun was waking up, and the cranes against a stronger light reminded me I had to go to work. They looked so beatiful, though.

Leaving

One more year, one more time, I leave. Once more, I hate it so much. I cried this morning, while I was packing and waiting for her to come back from work. She'll get half day off, which means we get to share a few more hours. We'll have the final countdown together.
How much I hate it... back to routine, back to her absence, back to work, back to nobody to hug, back to waking up early, back to her voice over the phone only, back to eat the same old food with the same old people... no more of her cutest face while she holds the chopsticks and looks at food with such a true passion :) ...
Back to enjoy the time with my friends, back to get used to not to have her, back to think maybe we are ok far apart for a few more months, back to the same old fears...
I have to lives. Each at one different side of the world. Sometimes I wish I could just take the underground and appear home, and then take it back.

Shoot-to-kill policy

"Armed officers are instructed to shoot at the head, not the chest, when facing a suspected suicide bomber, to disable them faster. The change follows advice from the Israeli police." from Man shot in terror hunt was innocent young Brazilian.

blog fixed

Finally, I was able to fix the blog. Now it should read well on firefox. Why I fixed my blog? Cause it's two in the morning in Hong Kong, and i can't sleep. I gave up smoking three days ago, and tonight it's becoming unbearable. Today I didn't do much, and so i'm not tired. Combined with the absence of nicotine, i assume i won't sleep tonight. Fuck.

Anyway, I'm having a great time here. I miss writing electronically, but I've been writing quite a lot off line. I should be able to post in a week or so. Kisses to all (including you, choche)

Back to the oriental lands

Tomorrow I leave for the oriental lands, once more. I feel sort of weird, like I always do before engaging on such a long trip, and after so many months without seeing or touching my little girl.
It's gonna be three weeks literally on the other side of the world, so I should be able to disconnect from everything and charge my soul with a bunch of new sensations to digest slowly, as the sun sets down in the Pacific ocean.

Alive

Hello, yes, I'm alive. Many things have kept me from writing delicious short pieces these days.
1. i'm leaving on holidays in a week
2. i had dinner twice at my brand new old appartment
3. seems like today somebody tried to break into my brand new old appartment
4. trouble with my bank accounts: my debit card works on every atm machine except for the atm machines of my bank
5. i have to paint the balcony and the bathroom, but i only painted half of the door of my room
6. i fell in love with landiman's brand new iMac and his pirated copy of Final Cut
7. i went to barcelona's digital film festival and, after watching the pieces that made it to the final round, realised i can be an excelent digital film director
8. i stayed up until six in the morning with jorge talking about physics and smoking pot: we figured out the easiest way to explain why the speed of light is the same from every reference system
9. with torjman, we developped the concept of digital shit hole: "dishithole"
Ok, enough.

It's damn hot, and it's also my saint, today. My chinese girlfriend still has problems understanding what it means that today "is my saint"... do you? Let's say it's a day when you celebrate my name, and the name of all the people who's named like me. My saint is supposed to hold the keys to heaven, though up to now, I only hold the keys to my (rented) place.
I'm not much of a celebrator of birthdays and saints, specially since I realised society considers me old already. Every advertisement I see portraits younger people: that means I'm old.
Anyway. Today I watched Manhattan for the ... time. But I think it was the first time I watched it on cinemascope, on this huge screen they have at the filmotheque. Again, it was great. And it was great to see how a big cinema screen changes a movie so much. I mean I was able to grasp details, to feel emotions I had not perceived the previous times I watched the movie on my tv.
They say you can just watch Manhattan without sound, because it's so extremely beautiful. And you can just listen to Manhattan's dialogues and music without images, because they are so brilliant. It's a perfect definition, though today I thought the visual part of Manhattan is maybe the best bite of the movie.
Anyway, what are you waiting for?

Because

... because life is not only about intellectual or sexual stimulation, yesterday i spent the day painting my brand old appartment with sweet ann. The color chosen was white, the hours from 1pm to 6pm, though the fruitman was seen at 8pm cleaning the floors and at 10pm smoking a cigarrete after having successfully assembled the ikea furniture he had bought a couple of days ago.

Sweet ann provided an invaluable help: in fact, not only did she paint most of the walls, but if it wasn't for her assistance, the fruitman can't tell how the walls would have ended. It turns out that the mechanism of painting is simple... if you know how to dip the cilinder-with-a-stick (el rodillo, vaya, from now on, "painting roller") into the white paint. I didn't. I was one of this innocent mates that think: you buy the can of paint, you get home, you dip the "painting roller" into the can, you smash it onto the wall, you move it up and down.

But the sweet ann came and said: "well, there's this squared can with a flat filter attached to it. you dip the painting roller into the paint, then you make it roll on the flat filter, so the paint is distributed uniformly through the roller, and does not drop, and then, only then, you can proceed to paint the wall".

I wish I could draw it, once you see it, it's so logical. And it works so well. I have to confess that I felt so happy after seeing the whole room all brand new whited. It's an amazing sense of achievement, much greater than assembling ikea furniture. As I was painting, I wanted to be a fucking house painter. I was so fucking good at it: you paint an appartment per weekend, with the music and the beer and stuff, and from monday to friday... party!

After lunch, torjman joined us and provided essential moral support. And well, physical too, of course :)

But it was 9pm, and ann and torjman had left, and I was left alone with a can full of paint and a pair of painting rollers full of paint. What the hell can I do now? I mean, can you just leave the painting rollers full of paint? Will the paint on the can dry? Will the rollers dry, and become unusable? Fuck! I mean those are tricky questions. And I had nobody to ask, and no proper place to wash or throw everything left.

So I though: "fuck, i'm gonna paint the fucking balcony in white, until no paint is left behind!" And so I did. And I felt like the fucking king of great ideas.

Noche de San Juan

Amanece.

Groucho

Thanks to kel, I read an email from -p, and I couldn't help thinking of Groucho Marx. Here is the quote that made me laugh:
"The student was telling me to shut up. My reputation is not very good and I basically have no authority; they all know now that I am a lesbian ( I told them the first time in a taxi in Hanoi, and it caused a lot of consternation), and now they say I have a dykish hair style; last night, when I offered one of the students to marry me, so that I could get the green card, he said that it would happen "only over his dead body", to which I responded 'cool, I am a necrophiliac', so I am a necrophiliac lesbian now. Today I also told them I was a feminist."

Rambling

It was a rambling weekend. I fought with my girlfriend a few times, and a few times we reconsidered our positions and achieved peace of mind. It's mainly a problem of cultural differences, but it seems that our similarities are above culture, and so we keep on together. Mmm... I look forward to landing in hong kong... I need sashimi and tai chi and feng shui and asian cinema. And a bit of sex too, maybe :) ... sashimi and sex is a good combination to overcome cultural differences... raw stuff, you know.
On the other side of the weekend, I spent most of my time reading and watching movies and thinking.
Reading:
1) A hundred years of solitude, by García Márquez. Started as a great novel, continued as a bit too boring read, but cannot put it off. I'm just so in love with Úrsula. There are no women like Úrsula no more.
2) A book by an american guy who rented the appartment where I lived until I was one year old, James Nolan. We still sort of keep contact with him, and the other day he presented his book in Barcelona and we bought it and I'm reading it. In the book, he rambles around with interesting thoughts in the form of easy going essays. Thoughts like: before we got paid for recycling. True: I remember carrying the empty glass bottles down to the grocery and getting paid for each of them. Now all the profit is for the manufacturers.
Watching movies:
1) the man who shot liberty valance: once more, I realised cinema ain't what it used to be.
2) mystic river: once more, I realised there's still some cinema like john ford used to do it.
Thinking:
1) does joaquin have "tokyo blues" by murakami, or however the japanese name is written?
2) ...

White screen

The white screen. Again, the white screen. Simbols, experiences, lights of the day everywhere, but the screen is white. White like the end of the joint I'm smoking, the tip where my lips touch the burning paper. And I think that the white screen is like the white cigarette: as you write, as you smoke, the white starts to vanish into a mixture of black letters and grey ashes.
I put off the cigarette on the ash tray that Patrick gave me when he came back from Gottingen, where Hilbert developped the mathematical language of quantum mechanics. It was three years ago, back when I was still interested in Hilbert. I wish I had now the energy to study Hilbert again, but with what I know now.
We're always late, even when we realise we are late, it's already late. And we say "I wish I had not fallen in love for you, I wish I had known you earlier, I wish I had not sold those stocks, I wish I had studied more, I wish I had taken that job..."
Rubbish. All rubbish. I think it was Kuhn who said that "ones who are ahead of their generation are actually the only ones that understand their generation". Einstein was not ahead of his time: he produced the atomic bomb, they key element of the 20th century.
I'm high, but I must say: that I do not regret anything, but that I live to regret.

Pot, again

After some months, I am having a joint in my room, again, 100% pure, green herbs. Joaquin, from the other side of the world, is (discontinously) chatting with me. Anyway, I just got an email from a (girl) friend from school asking me to fill in a questionaire. They want to make a documentary about our generation, but first they ask some questions to prepare for it. So, I am answering the questions happily and very wity (I am known for being very good at witiness) and suddenly, this question comes: "how many times have you had sex?"
"Fuck!" I think. And then: "ok, fuck, but how many times?" So I answer "10,000".
The questionnaire ends asking for a suggestion about a topic that might define our generation. I write: "We are the generation that was going to get anything it wanted, and instead we are ending up like a bunch of mediocrity".
I feel I do not belong to this generation. But then, what?

I am spam

Kel's journal has identified me "as an open proxy (a common source of spam), so comment access is denied". So, since I cannot comment on your blog, dear kel, I will comment on here :)
1) Kel wrote about "the secretary problem":
"To our friend's spouse-seeking woes, Von Bing allegorically posed 'the Secretary problem':
Imagine you need a secretary and are interviewing candidates one by one.
You must accept or reject each candidate after the interview. That means you must decide after meeting each, whether or not you will hire them.
You cannot reverse the decision once made and you cannot go back to choosing a previous candidate.
This, Von Bing hinted, was how he found his wife.
I asked him tonight if there would be other ways of solving the problem (since he is a statistician).
He smiles and says there probably are strategies, but he wouldn't want to go back down that road.
Would you?"

2) Mr. Berkeley man commented:
"well, if you get to meet someone like anne, what's the purpose of going back down that road?
you have the yaps, you will meet piotr.
you have new flashy shabby chic clothes.
i envy you."

3) An I comment:
"well, in a market economy like ours, it's quite cheap to fire an employee... and quite easy to get a divorce. secretaries and wives are not asset-specific goods, which means that the transaction costs are low. so, problem solved. :)
(the fruitman speaking the language of economics like he knew any economics)"

Absence

It's been I while since I don't write in English. Ok, that's obvious. Anyway, forget it, and let's start:
Yesterday I went to this round-table where my father was participating. I didn't know what it was about, and to my surprise I discovered that it was a meeting of bloggers and "traditional" writers of diaries. My dad was the traditional type, of course. So I sat there, and listened to what people had to say.
I felt kind of outraged at the bloggers speaking there. In a way, they presented blogging as an "evolution" to traditional writing. They spoke about the superior "freedom" of blogging vs. traditional writing. And I am sick and tired of listening to the same old shit of how technology makes us better. I think we should all make an effort to think a bit further.
To me, blogging has nothing to do with the evolution of writing or with freedom. To me, it's a form of self-reflection about the world and myself, a self-reflection that is constructed through myself but also through communication with my readers. A vehicle to explore my thoughts and my life.
Anyway, what do you think about it?

Ayer volví a ver Melinda & Melinda.

Y Melinda responde "ain't those the same tears?"...

a abrazarnos.

Office stuff

Let me begin a new series of posts regarding life in the office. I know, it's a common thing. But it is part of my life, too.

Today I told an office mate how much I was earning, and how much I wanted to earn. The answer I got was sort of "you don't ask that much cause then there's no more dough for the others"

I thought it to be the answer of a total loser. It's sad how money always shows you the parts you don't wanna know about people. But it's like that, just that we tend to ignore it.

Play it again, fruitman

Yes, again. Again I've been looking for flats. What do you think? Yes, I know. I thought the same, so I left my computer behind and grabbed the guitar. And I played one by u2. Fucking one. Yes I did. And I did quite well. I still remembered the chords from my good old days, and I realised I can sing even better than bono. Serious :)

Should I pack my things and leave to amsterdam to play the blues?

Play it again, fruitman. Almost 27, but I can still play... the game has just started.

Meanings

What happens when you get to the point where you understand that there are no meanings? I don't know. Lately, I have been doing a lot of thinking on what happiness might be. I have been doing a lot of thinking on the meaning of life. Why am I here? What am I supposed to do? What makes me feel I want to keep on living?

There was a time when I thought love might be the answer. I am here to love and to be loved. To share my life with someone, to raise my kids, to watch TV on the sofa and hug my wife. I also thought I would find a nice job at university and teach the boys and girls something completely useless but entertaining. I also thought entertainment was a good reason to live for.

Yesterday night, back home from Jamboree, I started thinking about it all over again, and a terrible headache took over my body. The same one I am feeling now. It's terrible, you know. It starts as a terrible pain in my forehead, and then it feels like there's something boiling inside my head. I feel it now, right now, and actually I find it very difficult to keep on writing.

It makes me feel like I arrived to a limit I cannot trespass. It's actually just that: there is something I cannot understand, something I can somehow see but doesn't cristalize completely. It's there, but I can't grab it.

And then those images come to my head. My mother, a man, my girlfriend, my youth, a river, me as a child in the dark with the same headache, my father asking whether he should take me to hospital. And me, always me, keeping everything inside, not explaining anything, convincing myself that there's nothing to explain. All over, all over, all over... up until now.

Up until now, to this night. Up until now, up until I have repeated myself so many times that there was nothing to explain. Up until I don't know anymore whether there's anything to explain. Up until where meaning does not exist anymore. Where there are no meanings.

Is that what you call growing up? That headache... I should sleep.

Jazzy night

The day was kind of boring. You know: usual office stuff. You know: one of those days you wanna come back home as soon as possible to hug your teddy bear. I came back home and there was no teddy bear, but a message from landiman was waiting on my cellphone.

And so I did: jazzy night at Jamboree with Landiman, Torjman and Mr. Palace. Landiman is in love, Mr. Palace very talkative and Torjman, well, he's the one that reads the blog but never leaves any comments. Will you this time, torj? (hope you slept well, anyways ;)

Jamboree is a great place to be, even though the beer got up to 5 fucking euros. We listened to jazz sitting on the floor and smoking casual cigarretes. Beautiful women all over were reminding us of our loneliness. How many beatiful women fit inside Jamboree? Countless...

Jazz and beautiful women. That's Jamboree, and I love it.

Round day

Today was just perfect from 6pm, quite a good deal if you consider I woke up at 3pm. After showering myself exhaustively, I headed off with -j and torjman to watch j's sweetheart dance. And she did good, really. It was at a village 20 mins from Barcelona. After the dance, typical catalan style they told me, we were dragged to the correfoc (sort of "fire runner"...)

The correfoc is, I was told, a catalan tradition that goes as follows:

1) you protect yourselve with old clothes all over and a scarf covering your face.
2) you go to a street full of people with fire crackers and those sticks that throw fire sparks in every possible direction
3) there are also several dragons that throw fire sparks through the big big mouth and the wings and the tail
4) you are in the street, surrounded by fire and the smell of powder and the smoke, and you can't but run and scream inside and outside

At the end of the correfoc I entered a football court where everybody was getting into. Suddenly, surrounded by all the smoke, I saw those men. Fuck, I saw a line of six men each one with this big fucking gun. That's it, I thought. I screwed up. And then one of those crazy men shooted the gun. And the other, and the other. It was really a scaring experience, but here I am safe.

Anyway, after that it was time to have dinner, and dinner we had. At the park of the village, a big slice of bread full of tomato, and a long sausage and a glass of beer for 3 euros. And then a little bit of pot: the right amount to make it all so perfect. And the cold air, and the conversation under the stars and the orchestra playing some music. And the wet green grass, and me thinking how much I missed you there, and how much we would laugh at that moment together.

And well, everything seemed to finish there, at 2am, when torjman and me were coming back to Barcelona, me driving still with some pot inside my brain. But safe, really safe man, I was so perfectly precise. So I drove torjman home, and then thought "Ktur".

"Are you still having that party tonight, ktur?" "Sure I do, give me a ring when you're home and I'll throw you the keys from the balcony"

And well, I parked two blocks from ktur's, and he threw the keys, and I entered ktur's world at 2:30 am. And alcohol kept filling my veins, and some more pot relaxed my lungs. And I realised why I like ktur so much. Usually, with the people I have the most intelligent conversations, I also have the most absurd ones. And this is absolutely great. I like so much to laugh with people like ktur. And tonight, we laughed, and I chatted with this guy, and this other one, and that black haired girl that speaks russian and english, and well, it all was so cool and yet so close, so natural and so strange, so mine.

And then kel discovered that I copied a verse from Neruda on this blog some days ago. And I smiled to her :)

And now, the first light of this Sunday enters by the window, and Norah Jones is caressing my ears.
